Green Hosting - Are their options?
With the increases of electricity, increasing costs have recently hit the servers I have hosted in London.

As the machines are quite "heavy" on the juice and outage, it therefore means that normal hosting bills have been a shock.

Some companies, have had to change their pricing from the standard "rack space" use to "wattage" use.

This therefore has led the hosting invoices jump to being triple in price which has been a growing concern. These servers are needed for hosting websites or acting as my mail server.

As I am working in the "green" business sector I continually looking at how to become a more environmentally friendly company.

Living with a IT industry worker, the house is often a testing zone, therefore the use of more electricity is already a growing concern without the recent rises or further environmental concerns. The hum of servers at home is always a gentle reminder or the latest box of gadgets being tripped over.

Since the huge increases of electricity and the costs of hosting rapidly gaining a few more zeros I have persuaded my partner that a greener option is required - not just for the environment but also for the business and home pocket as well.

It is important to practice what you preach, and therefore I am now looking at greener options when it comes to hosting.

There are various companies providing a greener option where by the electricity is sourced directly through solar power, eco hosting through a web workers co-operative, carbon neutral offsetting of hosting or even virtual hosting is also available.

This is just one area where I have been able to look at my own business with regards to becoming more eco friendly and supportive of wholesome environment for all. But more importantly being able to reduce the costs as well.
